Our Duty Calculator Answers Your Customs Questions Fast
Use our duty calculator to estimate the border and customs fees when importing goods and vehicles into Canada or the US. How does it work?
GETTING STARTED WITH THE DUTY CALCULATOR
Select your item type, whether it’s a vehicle or any other item. This step is important, as it’ll change the type of fees and taxes applied to your calculations.
Importing a Vehicle
First, select your country of import. It’s important to pick the right selection, especially when importing vehicles, as different rules and rates apply between the US and Canada.
Canada
If you’re importing a vehicle into Canada, you’ll first need to enter your province, as that will have tax implications on the total border fees.
USA
If you’re importing a vehicle into the US, you’ll then need to enter the year of the vehicle. Year ranges are split between vintage cars, slightly older vehicles, and new vehicles. The year of the vehicle can determine duty rate.
Country of Export
After selecting which country the vehicle is being imported into, select where you are shipping from on the duty calculator. Default options include Canada, USA, China, Japan, and Germany, but you can also enter any other location.
Country of Origin
An important step in the vehicle duty calculator is selecting where the vehicle was made. Default options include Canada, USA, China, Japan and Germany, but any location can be entered.
Approximate Value
You’ll want to know the vehicle’s approximate value for the duty calculator. This helps create an accurate view of the total fees at the end. Be sure to include whether the value is in USD or CAD.
Air Conditioning
If the vehicle has air conditioning, additional fees will be applied in Canada.
Individual or Business
Selecting an individual over a business has implications with the quote at the end of the calculator. Are you a business looking to increase your border efficiency? Contact us today.
Your Vehicle Duty Calculator Quote
After making your selections, our calculator will then take in your info and create your Grand Total Fees. For example, on a vehicle being imported into Alberta, Canada from the USA, with a year of 2017 and made in China, and an approximate value of $18,800 USD, would have the following fees:
- Value for Customs: $23,793 CAD
- ITN Number: $200
- Vehicle Inspection Fee: $325
- AC Fee: $100
- Forms: $44
- Duties: 6.1% – $1,451
- HST: 5% – $1,189.66
- Clearance: $355
- Clearance HST: 5% – $17.79
Grand Total Fees: $3,682 CAD
Importing Any Item
Canada
Much like importing a vehicle into Canada, or anything else for that matter, your province matters. The duty calculator will start by asking which province you’re importing to.
USA
When importing any general goods to the US, you need to select where that item is coming from. Different countries have different duty rates. Default options include Canada, China, Japan, and Germany, but you can enter any location.
Entering Your Item
Put a general description into the duty calculator. While this doesn’t have an impact on the final quote, this can help our team get you more accurate quote information, if you choose to work with us.
Country of Origin
Select which country the item was manufactured in. This is different than the location it’s being shipped from, and can have implications on your final quote. Default options include Canada, USA, China, Japan, and Germany.
Approximate Value
As with any import, entering the approximate value into the duty calculator will allow it to accurately give you a border quote. Remember to select the correct currency, CAD or USD, when entering approximate value.
Individual or Business Use
Individuals importing items face less fees than a business importing items. Remember to select the correct value in the duty calculator to get the most accurate quote possible.
Your Item Duty Calculator Quote
After entering all your item information, the calculator will output a Grant Total Fees. For example, on a mattress being imported to the US from Canada, made in China, with an approximate value of $499, for individual use, would have the following fees:
- Customs Duties: 30% – $149
- Customs MPF: $27
- Entry Fee: $100
- Bond: $60
- Bond Underwriting Fee: $10
- ABI Fee: $6
- Importer Registration Fee: $20
- Administrative Fee: $13
Grand Total Fees: $391
