1. Identify your Business Account Manager (BAM)
The first person to connect their personal profile to a business account becomes the Business Account Manager (BAM). The BAM has the highest level of access to the business account and can read, write, and edit all business information in the CARM Client Portal. It is advisable to have at least two people in your organization designated as BAMs:
- Someone responsible for making payments to CBSA.
- Someone responsible for managing customs processes.
Further considerations include:
- Who will handle the payment of duties and taxes in the CARM Client Portal?
- Will this task be delegated to our Customs Brokers?
- Which other staff members should have access to the CARM Client Portal, and what level of authority should they have?
2. Gather required information
Your accounting department might have this information. Please have the following details ready for the next step, as they will be needed to set up a Business CARM Client Portal account:
- BN9, also known as Business Import Number (9-digit number issued by CRA)
- BN15, is the Importer/exporter program account identifier in addition to the BN9, for example, 123456789RM0001.
3. Create your CARM Client Portal user profile using one of the sign-in options
Each user needing access to the CCP must create their own profile. Upon creating your profile:
- The Business Account Manager (BAM) should choose “Register my business”
- All other users should select “Employee Access Request”, provide the 9-digit Business Number, and wait for Business Account Manager (BAM) approval.
4. Register the Business in the CCP
Each user needing access to the CCP must create their own profile. Upon creating your profile:
- Legal entity name or operating name of the business - must be exact
- Full physical or mailing address of the legal entity - must be exact
5. Answer the security questions
The security questions can be one or two of the following:
- Duties and taxes payment: The CCP will ask you to provide a transaction number and the total duties and taxes for a B3 (Canada Customs Coding form) that was previously accepted by CBSA.
- Payment amount: The CCP will ask you to select a date (MM/YYYY) and enter a payment amount made on the selected date.
- Statement of Account (SOA) balance: The CCP will ask you to select a date (MM/YYYY) and enter the Statement of Account balance for the selected date. You may contact CBSA directly for this information at 1-800-461-9999.
6. Grant Employee(s) access and delegate authority
The secondary BAM and any other employee needing access to the CCP should log into their User Profiles and request access by selecting “Request access to my employer.” They will need the BN9 and must provide a reason for their request.
The BAM who established the business account will then review and approve these access requests by navigating to “Manage pending employee requests,” where they can approve each request and assign the appropriate level of authority.
