Duty, Tax and Tariff Calculator

How to use

How to use the duty and tax calculator

01

Choose destination and origin

Select Canada or the US as your destination, and where the goods are made. Origin determines whether a trade agreement like CUSMA reduces or eliminates the duty.

02

Enter product description or HS code

The HS code sets the duty rate. No code? Enter a description and the tool looks it up using our AI-powered Canada or US tariff lookup tools.

03

Add value and shipping cost

Customs calculates duty on goods value plus freight and insurance. Enter these and the calculator returns your estimated duties, taxes, tariffs and total.

ESTIMATE

What your estimate includes

The calculator returns your full landed cost, not just the duty. A common reason importers get surprised at delivery is that they budget for duty alone and forget the taxes and fees stacked on top. Your estimate accounts for:

01

Import duty

the percentage set by the product's HS/HTS classification and country of origin.
02

Sales tax

GST, HST, or PST in Canada; state-level taxes generally don't apply to US imports, but other federal fees can.
03

Tariffs and surtaxes

additional charges on specific goods or countries, including recent US and Canadian trade-action tariffs.
04

Processing fees

such as the US Merchandise Processing Fee and similar government charges, where applicable.
CANADA

Calculating import duties into Canada

Even duty-free goods are subject to the 5% federal GST, and many provinces add HST or PST on top, so the tax line is often larger than the duty line.

01

Create your Zipments account

Goods that qualify under CUSMA (the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement) often enter duty-free, but they must meet the rules of origin. Verify your code with the Canada tariff lookup tool.

02

GST, HST, and PST

The federal GST is 5%. Depending on the province of import, you may pay HST or a separate provincial sales tax. Our guide on the difference between GST, HST, and PST breaks down which applies where.

Calculating import duty and tariffs into the US

Importing into the US means classifying under the HTS and checking for additional tariffs based on country of origin.

01

HTS duty rate

Set by the product's 10-digit HTS code. Confirm yours with the US tariff lookup.

02

GST, HST, and PST

Section 301, Section 232, and other trade action tariffs can impose high costs on specific countries. These change frequently.

03

De minimis rules

The low-value exemption changed in 2025.

FAQ

Answers to all
your queries

How is import duty calculated?

Import duty is calculated by multiplying the customs value of your goods by the duty rate tied to their HS or HTS classification. Sales tax (GST/HST/PST in Canada, or federal fees in the US) and any applicable tariffs are then added to reach your total landed cost.

How much can I import into Canada without paying duty?

Low-value courier shipments from the US and Mexico can qualify for duty and tax exemptions below the set de minimis thresholds under CUSMA. Goods that qualify under CUSMA rules of origin may also enter duty-free at any value, though GST and provincial taxes can still apply.

How much is US import duty?

US import duty varies by product and is set by the 10-digit HTS code, ranging from 0% to well over 25% once additional tariffs are included. Many goods now carry Section 301 or 232 tariffs on top of the base rate, so the HTS rate alone may understate your cost.

Do I need an HS code to use the calculator?

You don't need one to get a rough estimate, but an accurate HS code produces a far more reliable result. Use the Canada tariff lookup or US tariff lookup to find yours before you calculate.

Is the duty, tax and tariff calculator free?

Yes. BorderBuddy's duty and tax calculator is free to use with no account required. You only pay duties, taxes, and brokerage when you actually import.
