On August 1, 2025, the Canadian Government implemented two new surtaxes on certain steel and aluminum imports. The first is a TRQ (Tariff Rate Quota) surtax on steel goods, which imposes a 50% surtax on imports that exceed specific country- and product-level quotas. This Order was amended to now include FTA countries, with the exemption of the US and Mexico.The second is a Country of Melt and Pour (COM) surtax, a 25% charge on certain steel and aluminum goods melted, poured, smelted, or cast in China, regardless of the final country of origin.You can find a complete breakdown of these new measures in the two bulletins that have been prepared.
